This limited-edition compilation from Schizo Fun Addict is a collection of music from their early career, remixes and a few new tracks thrown in for good measure. Having never heard them before they could instantly be described as new rave, which seems strange seeing as the earliest tracks on the album are from 2001. Maybe they were just ahead of their time because the music still sounds right up to date.
A remix of a remix of one of their own tracks makes for an interesting opening. The new rave comes through but there are also strong harmonies and ambience in parts.
‘Jellstar’ shows they may have been influenced by rave but there’s a great combination of a sexy deep and breathy female vocal, Beastie Boys style rap-rock and an indie guitar riff going on in this one. If it sounds like there’s a lot going on it’s because there is, but it works really well.
Madchester-style vocals dominate the background in ‘Diamond’ and in ‘Chakra Tease’ you can pick up some Ska and Jazz. So having started off hearing a new rave style you then realise that this band can turn their hand to anything but the rave influence is always there reminding you of their roots.
In trying to think of a way to describe this album all I could relate to was turning the dial on the radio with all the music merging together to create a sound that challenges you to listen carefully but comes together in harmony.
The style changes continue throughout and they all work well. As a limited release this one may be hard to come by but go out and buy some Schizo Fun Addict, you won’t have heard anything like it and you won’t be able to help yourself liking it.
