This is what a collaboration between Massive Attack and Kraftwerk would sound like.
It’s got the druggy air, the deep bass groove, the heart and menace of the former, combined with the clinical detachment and electronic precision of the latter.
And inbetween the two is where the tension clashes and the excitement begins. ‘Alonely’ gets things off to a nicely quiet and creepy start, the percussion and synth airs slowly creeping up the base of your spine, causing minor ripples of excitement and fear. Then later on, ‘Speak Without Tongues’ dives right in, sending you over the edge with a sound that swamps your ears, a swarming bass groove with anger and a defiant political attitude.
Two-part closer ‘Voyage Beyond Andromeda’ brings you down nicely at the end, with a warm and supple soundscape that ably supports your aching body and mind. With such hidden depths that you will welcome and reap, this, then, is the perfect November Bonfire Party soundtrack and a welcome antidote to all the tinselly horrors that are sure to follow.
