Wading in like a two-headed slacker pop beast, Rocket Uppercut’s new album ‘The Beautiful Tragedy’ doffs its cap to the traditions of what being a young punk band entails, then headbutts you and spraypaints your backpack. Sounding like late 90’s pop minstrels Lush raggedly cribbing The Stooges’ back catalogue, it’s dumb, doe-eyed party punk from the get-go. Though as likely to have a cultural impact as a wet sock, ‘The Beautiful Tragedy’ seeps sleaze and bedsit guitar beatings at a thousand paces. From the new-wave intro of ‘Choices’ to the jerk-punk clatter of ‘Cinderella’ , it’s a messy affair , and the smothered lipstick depicted on the artwork sums this album up wholesale. Neither beautiful nor a tragedy, it’s Ikara Kolt b-sides whacked out by teens; alright in other words.
