Oh dear – terrible name (in fact I take terrible offence at their traducing of the best Beatle in my opinion, the unsurpassed Mr Starr, playing his first ever Glasgow solo date, oh please Mr Editor, get me a comp for this one, these sunglasses really do it for me…), but the first, detuned beats of this (‘Imagined Hearts’) take us right back to early MBV immediately, and that’s not a bad thing, if a bit out of tune. Rather ordinary female vocals but interesting chord changes, the chugging guitar and drums plus some feedback and electronic sequencing and the crucial “drums beat/electronic effects” bit around two thirds of the way through. So far, so unoriginal.
From there, we have other, harder tracks (‘So High’), male/female vocals, duetting sometimes, with even guitar solos and more feedback – I’m thinking Curve now (unfashionable now, so underrated…). And yes I have heard the whole album and am not too sure if any of the other tracks really “stand out” – no, they don’t, although some good sounds and effects – keep trying.
I think this release was quite well received by the press when it came out in January (Betty is fashionably late in reviewing it, the pile-ups darling, worse than piles) but really although it’s quite enjoyable, it really is so derivative – I’d be interested to see what they do live but this just sounds like shoegaze by numbers, or by mummmmblers.
Still, they have the ingredients for something good, so perhaps ones to watch.
They’re from Texas, by the way – allegedly.
