This is the album Monster was meant to be.
It’s a short and sharp album. Few songs see the three minute mark. Several of these songs were premiered at last year’s Dublin shows – songs which rush past at 100 miles per hour. There’s no room left for any ponderous navel-gazing – the set is infused with a crackling, live energy, which sweeps you off your feet. Michael Stipe’s vocals, once hidden so deeply in the mix, are pushed right up front. This man sounds more alive here than he has done for years; each song is driven along furiously. This is good, because you feel like you’ve missed something and immediately want to play the album again.
