Another livestream gig – this one from Olive Grove Records’ latest signing, the Glasgow-based Raveloe, comprising tonight chief songwriter/singer/guitarist Kim Grant, backed by Peter Kelly on drums and Paul Kelly on bass.
It is of course incredible to believe there have been no audience gigs in this much-loved Glasgow Southside venue for well over a year, and it is nice to see the stage setup complete with the old Persian carpet!
The show is really the launch for the new Raveloe single ‘New House’ (out this month on Bandcamp and other platforms) but of course other tracks get played too, from the excellent ‘Notes and Dreams’ EP mainly. First couple of songs (‘Abalone’ and ‘In the Crescent’) are just guitar and drums, then Paul joins on bass for ‘Post It’ and the sound becomes a bit meatier and more emphatic. Kim’s voice rises to the occasion but the subtle guitar lines which have been a trademark of previous recordings are still present.
‘Sunday Service’ sounds positively thrashy, not something BM would have expected but there you go…while ‘Steady’ is also turned into somewhat of a rocker!
They finish with new single ‘New House’ and my goodness it sounds good – some storming guitar work from Kim and the drum and bass keep steady on the beat, while the plangent vocals give us some introspective but also quite passive-aggressive lines of words – in the sweetest possible way!
Again, and BM has said this so many times – such a crying shame that The Glad was not hot with sweaty punters (whether the AC is working or not!), let’s just hope that this can be possible at some future point.
