Apologies to the band, because they will no doubt have this pointed out to them at every turn, but with a name like Quiet As A Mouse, you conjure up thoughts about what the group will sound like, and let’s be honest, it’s not that exciting. Names don’t have to mean anything, sometimes they mean a little, at other times a lot, but in this case, thankfully the group is bigger than what they project.
Opening song on the Memorybox EP is ‘Snowflake’ which is, quite aptly, a rather delicate song, but it rouses itself for a big finish, putting the timid strings to one side as the drums power home the xx guitars. It’s a well-judged opening track on an EP, drawing you in and then blasting to life before you start to think that your initial thoughts on the name were spot on.
‘The Day The Cat Came To Stay’ has a terrible title but it has the warmth and jangly nature you would expect from a Scottish guitarist from the 1980s. ‘Letter In My Pocket’ is a bit whiny, but it is the sort of song that people connect with and again, the drums are instrumental in changing the tone and feel of the song. You can also picture the climax line of the chorus being shouted by all during the band’s live shows.
The EP concludes with the title track, bringing together the different sounds and styles on the EP into a neat package. Quiet As A Mouse don’t sound like a band that rock out or turn up the volume all too often, but when they do, it works very well and provides a great blend to their songs.
