What would happen if Coldplay put their fingers in an electrical socket and got a jolt of lightening up their spine. They would probably start to sound a smidgen like new Edinburgh outfit Quiet as a Mouse.
Champions of the free download generation, Quiet as a Mouse are on the cusp of delivering their debut mini album and new single ‘Home is the Hardest Place to Find’, is a delicious little taster of what is still to come. Their successful release of ‘An Accident Waiting to Happen (Awoo woo woo)’ has jammed their foot enough in the door to raise their profile and attract some relatively well known name from “the biz”.
This new single has been produced by Marcus Mackay of Frightened Rabbit and Snow Patrol fame. And if his ability on a mixing deck is as credible as his reputation, Quiet as a Mouse could be on the verge of something extraordinary.
From the get-go, the new single is a stomper. Loud, brash and altogether intimidating in its presentation to the ear. Yet there’s a gentile aspect to the delivery, with Alex Moran’s vocals lending a nice antithesis to the hammering guitars and thundering drums.
Yes, the subject matter might be a little played out and the lyrics aren’t quite as deep as they perhaps could, or should, be but there’s definitely potential there. More than that, in fact, there’s the sound of a lumbering, alterna-rock beast just aching to be set free.
If this new track is anything to go by, these guys have anthems capable of winning over any festival crowd, anywhere. Not just the drunks at T or the spaced at Rockness.
Punchy, raucus and altogether enjoyable, Quiet as a Mouse more than make up for their lack of experience as a band with a bolder than brass attitude. And in a market dominated by placid, play-it-safe rock and pop, maybe its about time we got something with a bit more bite.
Quiet as a Mouse have their dentures in already. And they’re hungry.
@isthismusic thanks for the lovely review! Chuffed your enjoying the song so much!
