Much is being made in the press of the fact that this is Pyrolater’s first album in 24 years. Having spent the intervening period keeping the wolf from the door with production work or remixing work, Pyrolater has been stacking up and honing this little miracle of minimalism.
To say this is a tad cold and observational is like saying that Everest is a big hill. The music comes on slowly and in surges, pushing you over in slow motion, like you’re falling backwards into a mattress of satin and velvet, which will slowly envelop you.
Pyrolater has spoken of the main themes here being land and discovery and this comes through right from the start, wide panoramic vistas opening up slowly and opening your eyes and heart up with them. This is, then, true winter music – cold, crisp and very enticing.
