The band’s website calls this set “incendiary” but that’s misleading.
Don’t expect raging riffs and head banging drums. Instead, what you’ll get is a collection of fine artists, each with their own voice. Songs like ‘How To Lose You’ have a sweetness to them that makes this a fun album. They’re about universal subjects, such as falling in and out of love, just getting by and day-to-day life.
These songs have clearly been honed and moulded to perfection and they shine. Fast and punchy songs, such as ‘On The Nights You Stay Home’ are well contrasted with more contemplative pieces, such as ‘Where Have You Been’.
Port Cities owe a lot to bands like The Decemberists and R.E.M (particularly in their ‘Out Of Time’ period). They are very sure of their own identity and are not afraid to put it across to us.
