Rather like with Depeche Mode, it’s encouraging that the Pet Shop Boys are still with us in 2009. Well over two decades since I saw them as an excited youngster on Top of the Pops (R.I.P), they continue to make good pop music.
The only frustrating thing is that they need to make a truly really great album again, and IMHO, the last time they REALLY did that was with Very, which was 1993. Songs like recent single ‘Love etc.’ and other songs like ‘Vulnerable’ and ‘Pandemonium’ are nice, good pop songs, but I’m looking for something that pushes the punches as musically as ‘It’s a Sin’ or lyrically as clever as ‘Can You Forgive Her?’ or ‘Being Boring.’
This is not a bad album, it’s a good album, but it’s not a great album. So, as a fan of over twenty years, I’m pleased to see it, hear it and know they are still with us. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely to win them new fans, and for a band as great as this, that’s a real shame.
