There’s a man on the inner sleeve of this record wearing a scarf in that ‘tied around the neck and worn with a sweater’ style so beloved of Paul ‘I’ve never made a good record in my life’ Weller and his dullard acolytes. The scarf-wearing one isn’t the driving force of Paperlung, though his look is fairly indicative of the music made by the band. No, the musical brains behind this Brand! Spanking! New! quartet is Sice. Yes, that Sice, the baldly frontman of 90’s nearly-weres Boo Radleys. I bet you were wondering what had happened to his red hot crucible of talent.
Anyone expecting the scouring guitars of such Boo Radley greats as ‘I Hang Suspended’ and ‘Does This Hurt’ will be horribly disappointed though anyone craving the saccharine puke of ‘Wake Up Boo!’ should be beating a path to their local record store right now.
Across this album on the increasingly rudderless Shi(f)ty Disco label, Sice churns out sub-Oasis toss after post-Britpop pap. I’m sure there’s still a market for this kind of thing but I can’t see Sice heading chartwards again soon.
