Ramrock Records have put out this collaboration between Check Masses, Rosanne Erskine and others. Over six tracks (all versions of the same tune) it gives us a vision of Edinburgh as a city with some dark corners, unsavoury characters and cinematic backdrops. Heavily reminiscent in places of Barry Adamson’s work in the 1990s, it gives some takes on the Athens of the North as a city haunted by ghosts (and an interesting parallel also to the Filthy Tongues’ first two albums…).
The instrumentation is superb, building up sonic atmospherics throughout the various versions of the track…the trombone also gives echoes of The Specials’ ‘Ghost Town’ – very 2020 unfortunately…
For BM the original track and the vocal remix are probably the best versions but with six here, you can choose your own fave…
