Created by, it turns out, one of The Twilight Sad. Not the singer, but the bass player Craig Orzel. And for anyone struggling to listen to any more epic walls of sound, this may come as almost light relief.
Not that this is pared-down singer-songwriting or anything, oh no. It’s more a sometimes nightmarish collection, a ramble through a haunted toyshop, with some truly bizarre moments. Best – perhaps inevitably – is when the ‘loud’ pedal is switched off and a sinister ticking is all that can be heard.
The “whole fucking album is free”, the band’s invite for you, dear listener. Invite? Perhaps more a warning. Combining soundtracky moments a la Aidan Moffat’s Lucky Pierre project, a sinister take on Minotaur Shock’s sea shanty phase, Al Green trapped in a cupboard of clockwork toys, the kid from the Exorcist fronting the Animals, and Throbbing Gristle creating a new theme from Magic Roundabout (possibly), Orzelda has constructed a musical pick’n’mix where you can delve in and satisfy your most base musical desires. It’s a place you should visit at least once. Only, you’d not want to work there.
