Appearing on the mighty Scottish Fiction label, this is another great track from Edinburgh’s Mt Doubt, who have make some running in the “up and coming” stakes over the past year or so. ‘Conduits’ is the lead track of this single release and comes from last years “Moon Landings” EP.
On ‘Conduits’, frontman Leo Bargery and his co-conspirators cook up a stirring set of riffs and chord progressions, above which his smooth baritone tells of emotional turmoil existential uncertainty. It sounds angsty but uplifting at the same time, which some lovely stop/start breaks and a wild guitar solo to boot. Bargery is joined by others on backing vocals and at well under 4 minutes it is a brief but well-rounded blast, very impressive.
New B-side ‘Athletics Season’ is more light-hearted, with plenty of huge riffage, lots of sly and disparaging lyrics about field sports and grass allergies – this is the sound of a band having fun, with a rollicking chorus and plenty of rocking out…
The full EP also has bonus acoustic versions of a couple of other ‘Moon Landings’ tracks, and the whole thing makes for a satisfying listen.
