Following April’s ‘Tomorrow’s Garden‘, this new EP from Molly Linen confirms her position as a very interesting artist indeed. Born in Shropshire, based now in Glasgow, the first couple of tracks are available now with the full release to come later in August.
Of the six tracks here the first, ‘A Lot To Give’, is a gorgeous slow strum, coupled with ML’s very expressive vocals – the instruments are simple but the constant keyboard wash in the background reminds BM a bit of Ivor Cutler, ha! It’s a song of encouragement, to someone, or other…
‘The Day Starts’ is also pastoral and has some great piano lines as well as some relaxed percussion, as ML’s vocals resound, with some slight echo maybe…
‘Space’ and ‘Awake At Night’ keep up the pace with some glorious sounds, guitars and woodwind maybe, still very acoustic, and with thoughtful lyrics – it’s as if ML is in some bucolic place but there are some shards around the corner, or hanging above…
There are shades of Joni Mitchell and possibly Vashti Bunyan in these songs – closers ‘Home’ and ‘Spring’ sound a more hopeful note, still with intricate guitar lines, and that slight but beautiful voice – ML has something, no doubt about that, and BM hopes that she can get the opportunity to show a wider audience just how good she is…
