Drogheda four-piece Modernlove. haven’t stopped this year, whether it was performing at festivals such as Tramlines, Truck, Latitude and more, touring the US for the first time (which included an appearance at SXSW!) or releasing their critically acclaimed EP ‘Nightlife’. 2023 has been a busy one to say the least.
Tonight, the band find themselves in Manchester, alongside a sell-out crowd at the gorgeous Deaf Institute, as part of a headline world tour in support of the aforementioned EP. First up is Mancunian singer/songwriter Ellysse Mason, whose captivating vocals shine throughout a set filled with bittersweet indie-pop bops. Check out tracks ‘Sober’ and ‘Spiders’ to get a feel of what you missed out on.
Tonight is all about Modernlove., the crowd, the majority of which are sporting some variation of the band’s merch, and have filled the room to bursting point, eager for the lads to take the stage. They arrive to an outrageous chorus of screams and cheers, starting off with latest single ‘Plans’, which is a singalong slice of high-energy grunge-pop and sets the tone for all that follows.
All tracks from ‘Nightlife’ are given an outing as part of a generous 16-song set, such as ‘Ruin Your Night’ an infectious gem of a track laced with relatable lyrics while following number ‘until my heart stops beating’ takes a more minimalist approach without losing an ounce of the audience’s attention before ‘Only Ever Only You’ ups the tempo once again with its pop-punk, emo-tinged hook.
‘2-Missed Calls’ brings about a darker moody narrative lyrically, though it’s still an upbeat, danceable track, and boy did this audience dance tonight, before their biggest single to date and fan favourite ‘Follow You’ rounds off an incredible evening of live music.
Modernlove are a band going from strength to strength, and with a hardcore fanbase, and the songs to back it up, expect to see even more from these lads in 2024!
