MJ Hibbett and the Validators

20 Golden Grates (Artists Against Success)

Nostalgia is in the air, and what better way to celebrate a couple of decades in underground music than by going completely retro.

So, the Peterborough singer-songwriter and his merry band, The Validators, have trawled their back catalogue of jangly, singalong tunes and put them on cassette.

From opening paean to the ZX Spectrum ‘Hey Hey 16K’ via the biographical ‘My Boss Was In An Indie Band Once’, it’s the stuff of Lamacq and 6Music, as Hibbett ponders life and growing up on ‘20 Things To Do Before You’re 30’.

There’s genuine pathos too on the tear-jerker ‘Billy Jones Is Dead’, and for those looking for a topical reference, there’s ‘The Fair Play Trophy’ – on the download version only, of course.
