With eleven tracks including the two previous singles ‘Footsteps 101’ and ‘Freakbeak’, the third Mitchell Museum is sunny but gritty Scottish indiepop at its best.
Opener ‘The Oldest Instant’ is the sound of someone giving themselves a good kick up the arse – “get myself together, now or never…!”
There is an element of processed beats in this record and BM would be very interested in how some of these tracks were built up in the studio, as it appears the live sound has been taken apart and re-imagined, with some samples and other studio techniques… is this Scotland’s answer to cLOUDDEAD?
‘Observation Room 6’ starts very low-key but builds up into a multi-tracked banger… with some very dark lyrics and chord changes, this is pure pop class with a twist…
A pretty consistently great album, there are some very original tropes, plus some original sounds and songwriting – especially the singles but also for example ‘Sunday Documentation File’…
From a band not afraid to break from the Scottish indie norm, and be eccentric, weird and wonderful, ‘Skinny Tricks’ could well be one of the albums of the year.
