With such a huge sound and such a tiny venue, I wasn’t entirely sure how this night would go down for ME. Of course, it was always going to be touch and go but thankfully they manage to pull it off impressively well with just a few minor sound problems, mostly with Luke’s vocals being drowned out by the rest of his band mates for the first half of the set.
After an explosive intro, the theatrical Australian quartet burst into ‘Naked’ followed by rifftastic ‘Vampire!! Vampire!!’, instantly delivering the goods to their Glasgow fans who’d been eagerly awaiting their arrival. Lighter jolly track ‘Rock and Roll Dandy’ and earlier track and fan favourite ‘Like A Fox’ come next and from what can be heard of Luke’s vocals, he’s sounding pretty top notch.
Slower tracks ‘Trails In The Sky’ and live rarity ‘Their Song’ have the audience swaying with their lulling effect while the likes of prog-pop wonder ‘Working Life’ and Danny Elfman-influenced ‘Your Favourite Colour’ have them bouncing around once again.
From start to finish, the band don’t disappoint the small Glasgow audience, with the mighty roar of ‘Hoo Ha’ and the sonic sensation that is ‘Westward Backwards’ ending the set on a high note.
The band stay around after their set to meet and greet with fans, excitedly signing merch and taking pictures, proving that, although their sound may be big and bombastic, these four Australian boys are far from the pretentious art students some may conceive them to be.
