Maya Maya are a three-piece from Glasgow and this a strong EP, thrumming with energy…
Opener ‘Both Names’ burbles away with Afrobeat guitar, and has an upbeat groove which cannot fail to draw you in… There are further complications in the lyrics, and the song builds up with more guitar licks, very catchy indeed and a welcome addition in 2020 lockdown times.
Second up is ‘Lifeguard’ and has more screechy guitar, and may be about telling a friend to buck the fuck up, because he/she has a great person holding them up… the water allusions come thick and fast, and the music is again catchy and groovy…
‘Driving Range’ might be expected to have some golfing metaphors but there are none to be seen (what a disappointment!) however this is likely about getting out of the big smoke, and again the guitar lines are upbeat and muscular…
And last track ‘Fever Pitch’ is again upbeat, catchy and accentuates the very solid drum and bass behind this band. The vocal is vaulting and bears a slight resemblance to Gaga’s ‘Pokerface’, nothing wrong with that at all!
