This promo is presumably highlights from I think a 4CD retrospective of around 10 years of Lone Pigeon recordings. (Yup- Ed).
There is a backstory here but you can check it out for yourselves, I’ll just tell you what it sounds like. Sounds like recordings beamed from the ether, possibly from another planet. Melodic, minimalist, a fragile vocal mixed with acoustic, electronic and other “found” backing noises, recorded in what sounds like various low-fi circumstances.
At times very focussed and tuneful, at times more inviting comparisons with Daniel Johnson or other idiot savant (sorry, inverted these commas) artistes, you have to suspend disbelief a bit at times and just let him get on with it.
Is this music? Is it folk? Ain’t it folk?
Well yes, sometimes, and you can certainly see the common thread of the Beta Band umbrella and its other various offshoots. I’m very sympathetic but I’m not sure if this all forms the basis for a career (does this matter?) – the self-released format can however provide the basis for recordings which otherwise would have seen artists like this in previous eras dumped without ceremony. As it is, some of these messages and ‘weird’ (used advisedly) songs can be seen as the true successors to Nick Drake and others’ solitary musings, and reach a wider audience through Domino.
