So great to be back at The Glad, BM’s local venue in Glasgow’s Southside, for a pretty full double-header, around 100 tickets sold of the 120 available, with some masks and social distancing going on but on the whole very relaxed…
BM kind of missed the release of Glasgow-based band Deer Leader’s debut album ‘We’ve Met Before, Haven’t We?’ on the Last Night From Glasgow label, but they played it in full tonight, and it was very impressive. A five-piece outfit, they built up the sound from a very quiet into to a sometimes snarling rock beast, with all four guitars and drums used to full effect. BM could detect some influences but this was broadly Scottish indie-rock, and it sounded great on the Glad’s sound system, ably manned by sound guy Craig. There were ballads, some angst in the lyrics and altogether a very sophisticated sound from this band – BM will have to check out the album…
Another Scottish outfit, and also signed to Last Night from Glasgow, Life Model were promoting their debut LP, ‘Lost on Weekdays, Lonely by Sunday’. Another five-piece, bookended onstage by singer/guitarist Sophie and guitarist at large Chris, plus keyboards, bass and drums. The 10 song set started with ‘Come Round’ and included previous singles ‘Sit Still’ and ‘Saskia’.
By the time it around to main set closer ‘Walking Backwards’ we had got a number of searing guitar solos from Chris and some excellent work from the others – the encore (in The Glad the bands don’t tend to go offstage as it is too bloody difficult to get off and back on, especially for the drummers, but we like it that way) was a track from Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tusk’, ‘I Know I’m Not Wrong’ which brought this great gig to a close.
An excellent night and big love to Last Night From Glasgow, the bands, sound and the Glad staff!
