After riding the punk-funk wave Liars chose to dive into the slipstream with two albums worth of tuneless noise. Clearly, the New York ensemble has now decided to produce an album of songs their neighbours would like to hear them rehearse. Well, barely, since this record includes slices of noise plus percussion (ie thumping really loud) such as Leather Prowler. The ‘song based’ approach is, if anything, more cerebral than their art-rock, deconstructing the Jesus and Mary Chain on “Freak Out” for example. An album, and group, that gets more intriguing with each listen.
