Kill It Kid are here, I think, to save the music world from boredom. Almost never on listening to this album did I confidently feel I could predict quite what tack they might take next. Rock’n’roll, bluesy, jazz, loud, cabaret style, two-part vocal harmonies – a delightful mish-mash is going on here. Overblown and dramatic, this band are never one to use just one instrument when four can do a better job. Violin breakdowns and forceful, stinted intros abound. Lead single ‘Burst Its Banks’ has already gained its rightful place on ‘single of the week’ lists – it’s a raucous thumper of a song. On the other hand, ‘Fool For Loving Me’ lets Stephanie Ward display her voice in a silky, then passionately throaty way within lines of each other before Richard Jones comes in to try and defend himself. It almost sounds like some number from Chicago – if Chicago was cool. Ward’s voice, again, shines on country-fied ‘Private Idaho’ – one of few gentler tracks to be found here – while Jones’ ends things with a heartbreaking wail on closer ‘Taste the Rain’. Listen, be entertained, and enjoy.
