This show launched the debut Kilgour album “How To Put Your Hat On”, with the support of Last Night From Glasgow records, but there were a couple of support acts on first.
Playing their debut Glasgow gig, Frank So were on early enough that BM missed the first half of the set – a four-piece from South of the border (including a ex-member of the late lamented Pronto Mama), they fairly rocked the place with last track of the set ‘You Let The Whole Team Down’ and BM was impressed by the slightly droll vocal delivery and guitar licks, with a bit of fiddle added to at least one track.
Slightly more local (well Stornoway…), Scott Park appeared next fronting a five-piece band comprising himself on guitar/vocals, further guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. Playing tracks mainly from a forthcoming album, the band ranged across country, blues and indie-rock references, the most dramatic track probably being the ‘Murder Ballads’-referencing ‘Catriona’, while other tracks like ‘Day Job’ covered everyday frustrations – this band is bursting with talent and went down well with the now fairly crowded room.
The place was jumping by the time the headliners came on around 8.30pm (the usual “early” showtime at Stereo) with what appeared like half of Belfast in the audience, including Fionn’s dad, who joined the band for a number later on). There have been a couple of changes to the live lineup (now a full five piece, with added trumpet and cello on a couple of tracks) since BM’s last encounter with Kilgour last year – the addition of female backing vocals/duet works very well. The songs, mainly from the album, tonight take influences from later period Nirvana, Scottish indie like Admiral Fallow and even a bit of early Van Morrison, melded into something quite special in Fionn’s songwriting, backed by intricate guitar-playing and great musical support from the others. A validation of a night, and judging by the crowd reaction, the party probably continued well beyond the 10pm ejection from the venue!
