Last month at Slam Dunk North, is this music? caught up with Aled Phillips & Shay Sheehy of the recently reformed Kids in Glass Houses to find out everything about their return; what brought the band back together, and where do they go from here?
is this music?: How did it go last night? That was the first one, right, no warm-up shows or anything, just straight back in at the deep end?
Aled Phillips: No warm-up shows, we practiced five times, five times in nine years, and then decided to play in front of 10,000 people.
Shay Sheehy: It went amazing, we recommend everyone do it our way!
itm?: That’s great, did it actually go well though, no mishaps at all?
Shay: It actually did!
Aled Phillips: I fell over and pulled a muscle, because I’m old now, but yeah that’s about it.
itm?: That’s how it’s done then, no warm-ups, couple of practices and then just do it!
Shay: You’ve either got it or you don’t!
itm?: Anyone else at the festival that you want to check out?
Aled: Holding Absence I watched yesterday, and watched a bit of them today, they’ve just finished. Shikari, their production is amazing and they’re such a sick band, and ZAND yesterday, they were cool.
Shay: Trash Boat were cool yesterday too!
Aled: So we watched basically everyone on our stage.
itm?: So, now that the band is back together, is it a permanent thing?
Aled: & Shay: We’re a band again.
Aled: Yeah, it’s not like we’re doing this then fucking off again, it’s open-ended.
Shay: Where we are as a band now, we’re in a really good place, you know, we’ve got the Smart Casual re-issue, we’ve got these festival dates, and we’ve got a tour to support that re-issue in October.
itm?: That’s brilliant, so what was it that brought you all back together?
Shay: It’s a bit of a weird one, we were seeing copies of our album, Smart Casual, the vinyl, going for hundreds and hundreds of pounds online, and we felt that was a bit wrong, so we wanted to do something about that, and it all sort of stemmed from that.
Aled: And now it’s like, “Oh fuck, we’re back in a band, we’re playing a festival, we’re doing a tour”.
itm?: I really appreciate you taking the time to sit down with us today, thank you so much, and good luck for your set!
Shay: Thank you very much!
Aled: Good to see you!
The Smart Casual re-issue will be released October 13th and is available for pre-order now over at: kidsinglasshouses.tmstor.es
