Kid Carpet – the UK’s top purveyor of Fisher Price electronica – has just completed a Scottish mini-tourin conjunction with is this music? and those nice people at the Greenside Hotel in Leslie. Which is where Laura Barbour met the Kid, to discuss his his sound, his image, and of course, his plans for a musical assault on Europe…
Are you enjoying the tour? How was tonight?
Absolutely brilliant! Glasgow and Dunfermline were great too but tonight was perfect. It’s a Saturday night and all the kids have come out to see this show in their home town in the middle of nowhere, you can’t beat that!
Is there any truth in the Eurovision rumours?
I’m fucking going! I’m going to apply to represent Poland, Bulgaria, the UK… You don’t even have to be from the country to represent them so I’m just going to apply to them all! A bunch of fans have even started a Facebook campaign to support me! Eurovision is brilliantly kitsch and cheesy, it’s like the crème de la crème of music!
How important is image to you?
In a way it’s all about the image, but at the same time it’s really not. I guess it’s a big part of the ‘act’ but it’s not contrived or anything, everything I do is from my heart and soul!
When you came offstage tonight you left hundreds of pounds worth of equipment on stage but took your toy microphone off with you…
I know but people have nicked my stuff before! It’s mostly sentimental value to be honest, that’s what I’m all about.
Do you shop at Early Learning Centre?
Mostly second-hand shops and pound shops! It’s amazing what you can find there! But those are the things that make me stand out I think so all my gadgets are really important to me. One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure!
When can we expect a second album?
Well I’ve just been offered a deal to record it so that’s really exciting! There will be a single in March and an album in May if all goes to plan. It’s going to be a bit… darker than ‘Ideas and Oh Dears’ but still quite poppy. I don’t think there will be as many little ‘ditties’ on this one. It’ll be more ‘keyboardy’ than ‘guitary’ too!
Will the album be eclectic or more conceptual?
It’s pretty much themed with failure and disappointment! A lot of it will probably be quite ironic but there is one particularly serious tune so I hope people don’t just think it’s totally naff in the middle of the other tunes!
Do you have a Bristol ‘massive’ back home? How do the Scottish crowds compare?
The Bristol fans are amazing; so loyal, but I love Scotland! I’m playing at Cabaret Voltaire in November and I can’t wait! Bring me back to Scotland!
