Edinburgh based indie popsters Kid Canaveral have had their debut album re-released on King Creosote’s record label Fence. The album has been given a full release, and a vinyl pressing – kudos to the band.
Kid Canaveral are singers/guitarists David MacGregor and Kate Lazda, Rose McConnachie on bass and Scott McMaster on drums. David and Kate are the writing unit of the band, with David the unashamedly accentuated Scottish rogue and Kate the softly spoken English girl, swooning and dreaming quietly to herself.
The band have been busy over the past 12 months, touring at every available opportunity, playing SxSW, building up a strong fanbase along the way. These 12 tracks show the breadth of their indie-rock pop – from catchy dance along numbers like ‘Good Morning’ and ‘You Only Went Out To Get Drunk Last Night.’
Those are the stand-out tracks alongside ‘Left and Right’, while Glasgow references aplenty track ‘Smash Hits’ (“You met her at the 13th Note”) and the epic-sounding slower paced ‘And Another Thing!!’ to the energetic offering of ‘Couldn’t Dance.’
The most beautiful moment of the album is the King Creosote-esque ‘Her Hair Hangs Down’ which makes your ears stand to attention the moment it kicks in.
I can’t really actually narrow this album down regarding standout tracks, all of them are equal and have a different vibe to them. If you liked Bis or Kenickie’s sing song girl pop you will love Kid Canaveral. They make happy music, with great lyrics and great tunes.
