“Music has no clear use.” So says the young man behind Scotland’s new signing to Island Records, Kid Adrift.
Thankfully this rather unusual statement from a man clearly very talented in the music department is meant only as an example of how music is so much more than a natural product like food or drink. “It makes you think outside of yourself, it represents something bigger than yourself.”
Given that the first song that would become Kid Adrift lyrically and musically was only written about one year ago, (‘Red, Green and Blue’ released by Euphonios on the L.E.D. Illusions EP), its swift rise up the ranks to Record of the Day, Zane Lowe’s Reaction Record slot and being enthusiastically supported by Vic Galloway is a fine example of top unsigned talent being spotted and encouraged early. All this came as a bit of surprise to Kid Adrift too, “I thought the lyrics of this first track were quite dark and it certainly wasn’t a a clubby tune, more a noisy electronic tune I wrapped up on my little home studio and laptop in my house in Dollar.”
But momentum continued to gather and soon enough the band were invited to record a session at Maida Vale as part of BBC Introducing at the Electric Proms.
Dubbed dubstep post-rock pop (!) the sound has been influenced by artists including Son Lux – a composer who creates heavy electronica and Mute Math who combine their rock with their electronics perfectly. The Kid is fascinated by the combining of weird sounds, bass heavy dubstep but with added melody.
Now based in London, Kid Adrift admits he is also heavily influenced by his Scottish homeland and can in fact, only write his best work when back home in Clackmannanshire surrounded by hills and peace. However the similarly quiet, thoughtful nature of the band members is just an illusion, one which is well and truly shattered when they unleash their live set, full of energy, noise and passion, unafraid to challenge and confront.
“Signing to Island Records has obviously been a real highlight for the band to date, and we share management with the likes of La Roux and The Klaxons. We’ve already had the opportunity to meet loads of really interesting and inspiring people. We’re looking forward to getting out on tour soon.”
The second Kid Adrift will be released in April this year alongside a nice little UK tour. With a recording trip to LA already set up and an album out early next year..the Kid and friends have a lot of work on their hands. Keep your ears open and eyes peeled – rumour has it the man who is a Kid has a habit of disappearing into himself to dig through the late night hours in order to search out the finest of hooks and the sweetest of beats. If his management and fellow band members can keep tabs on him and ensure the tunes reach the venues and airwaves then we should all soon have the privilege to watch Kid Adrift go spiraling into success.
