John Rush

Sister (Old Brown Shoe)

By • Jun 28th, 2020 • Category: Single review

West of Scotland based singer-songwriter John Rush has been bubbling under for a while now (see review of his sold-out show at Room 2 in Glasgow last November, back when actual gigs were actual things…)

Released on June 29th, this is the first track of new material after last year’s album release ‘Beneath The Apple Tree’ and it is another blast of soulful rock n roll, impassioned and bluesy. The track starts with some great acoustic guitar and is that a moothie? Anyway, the drums kick in, slightly late Beatles-ish, which BM is a real sucker for…

The vocal is plaintive (and treated in a unique way in this production, slightly Nutini-esque but with a burr of its own) , the piano gets going and the tempo is pulsing – this has the makings of a real anthem, full of emotion – and quite a twisted message really – “if you’re gonna love somebody, you’re gonna hurt someone…” – not for the faint-hearted…

But this is as catchy as Covid-19 – enough said…!
