J.J. Cale has created his own world by and for himself. Not a hint of any contemporary sound is betrayed, nor are there any traces of outside influences. There is some beautiful guitar playing ion display here, both from Cale and his assorted collaborators. It’s like an album you can have a bath in. It’s warm, it’s relaxing and it envelops you slowly in its own sense of self. It is rare these days (and rarer still for a musician of Cale’s vintage) to hear an album with such personality.
J.J. Cale hasn’t made any grand claims here, he’s just written a record about his life and the way he sees the world and if you like it, then fine. If you don’t then you can go and find something else to listen to. The man himself doesn’t much care. It’s the sort of album that takes a few listens to get into. He tunefulness will get you going at first and then, by the second or third listen, when you’re humming along to it, you’ll notice at least one lyric on the album that you can relate to.
