Twas a rainy, horrible night in Glasgow but in this venue at least, there was warmth and joy.
Firstly the support act – a debut (for this venue) gig by Dayydream, slightly tentative playing maybe, nice inter-twining guitars and soft but sure female vocals and some off-kilter but interesting melodies, ones to watch.
Then to a pretty busy and enthusiastic crowd Jill Lorean and her two bandmates (Andy Monaghan on bass/effects and Peter Kelly on drums) unleashed a supercharged maelstrom of noise – loud, angry and straight up exciting to witness.
Ostensibly the launch of her new album ‘Peace Cult’ (several new tracks were given a debut here), some of the real rush of this for BM at least was to hear some of her older material given the “on steroids” treatment, especially ‘This Rock’ and closer ‘Black Dog’.
Andy’s humungous bass-lines and other effects-driven noises along with some vicious drumming from Peter might have drowned our lead singer out, but she just sung louder and thrashed her guitar when required, giving tracks old and new a pretty brutal working over – thing is, they are good enough to stand it, and more.
This was impressive to say the least, and while Jill can display lyrical and musical subtlety in her solo shows, with a full band it’s a somewhat different and scarier beast!
