This is Americana as sung through a British voice. The influences may be the blues and roots Americana but the concerns are most definitely those of a man living in and deeply concerned with modern-day Britain. The voice has been matured by experiences both good and bad (something which comes through particularly on the title track and also the stunning Talk About It). Bell has that rare gift of sounding dark and sorrowful and yet, uplifting at the same time. The is a slow album, which you will gradually warm to and which is best played, late at night, with a glass of amber liquid in one hand and a cigarette slowly burning out in the other. In a world where even your average indie band seems hell-bent on clichés and mediocrity, Jeff Bell is a true original.
