With previous single ‘New Town Killers’ being listed as one of NME’s ‘Ten Tracks You Must Hear’ it seems the music world – or a part of it at least – is finally sitting up and taking note of Edinburgh based band, Isa and The Filthy Tongues.
‘Big Star’ is the opening track on the soon to be released debut album, ‘Addiction’ and perfectly showcases what this band are all about. Mean and moody bass lines, dirty guitar, unobtrusive but emphatic drumming all combine with vocalist Stacey’s sultry and yet threatening delivery to create a very distinctive track that lies somewhere between a psychedelic and dark surf sound.
This particular track has something in common with ‘New Town Killers’ in that they both feature in movie soundtracks, the latter in the recently released film of the same name. (I can thoroughly recommend he film as well as the track. It’s directed by former front man of The Skids and VH1 TV presenter Richard Jobson and is about as gripping and exciting film as you are likely to see… with the added bonus of a terrific soundtrack throughout.) Anyway, whereas the previous single was set and filmed in Edinburgh, ‘Big Star’ is from the Hollywood movie ‘Spread’ starring Ashton Kutcher and Anne Hesche, and is a romantic and sexually explicit comedy about the sex industry in Los Angeles.
With the sound of Isa and The Filthy Tongues now additionally gaining a foothold in the world of visual arts, maybe there is some sort of prophetic implications for the band in the title to this song?
Here’s hoping.
