BM lives in the southside of Glasgow and one of the most interesting developments (apart from The Glad Cafe, of course) has been the opening of this wee record shop/cafe on the Victoria Road (aka The Frontline for some people but not for BM, great place to be).
Owner of the shop Olly was away on childbirth duties while this event attracted a good 10 or even 15 people…
First up was Alicia, aka Sheman Sound, with a highly unusual take on guitar and vocals… She did a Judy Collins cover, she had tropes of Vini Reilly (who she has never heard of, when BM mentioned it!), and went between acoustic and electric guitar. BM was also reminded of several This Mortal Coil things, maybe just the wild experimentation, but all in all she is one to watch… very good indeed!
Howie Reeve has been around Glasgow for a while and is currently recording his new album, (80 per cent crowdfunded), and his combination of singular bass strumming and narrative/singing at times is highly original… Grumbling bass agogo…
We had tracks from the new album and some family faves from previous albums…
BM is going to nail this by saying he is like RM Hubbert vs Robert Wyatt, and then run away ‘cos BM is scared of the fallout…
Reeve’s delivery is very individual, as is his patter between the tracks – just catch this man live.
