It was a night mixing new faces with returning heroes, with first support for the evening being Gareth Goodlad with his new solo project Vampire Voltage.
It was an interesting genre bending set with distorted guitars playing over a high-tempo, almost EDM beat. The tempo slowed down at times as Gareth was joined by Amelia of Midnight Ambulance before picking up with some new material played for the first time.
No Windows came on as the second support, a singer / songwriter duo from Edinburgh joined by friends on bass and drums. The charming duo seemed to lose their ability to banter – “How are you doing?” was jokingly repeated multiple times throughout the set. Their melancholic set blurred the lines between indie and folk with Verity’s vocals standing out beautifully. A young band with a very mature sound that are definitely worth keeping an eye on.
The leak in the roof of Stereo that had persisted through No Windows’ set came worryingly close to raining on the parade but Honeyblood weren’t going to let that stop them. This tour is a celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the release of the critically acclaimed self-titled album ‘Honeyblood’. It prompted some confusion when the band kicked off with ‘Chocker’ but Stina promptly explained they would be playing the album out of order to make space for some special b-sides of the time.
“I wrote this song about Glasgow” got a large cheers just before ‘(I Would Rather Live) Anywhere But Here’ started and the joke was well received. ‘No Big Deal’ and ‘Kissing On You’ are played as the surprise b-sides. “We are serious professional women to be taken seriously” exclaimed Stina sarcastically as the band start thrashing around the stage to the hit single ‘Killer Bangs’. ‘Super Rat’ ended the night in a singalong, a fitting end for a night that was both in name and spirit, a celebration.
