Edinburgh-based Hamish Hawk has been active for a wee while now, but hasn’t really come up on BM’s radar until now. This is a very arresting piece of music, guitar riffs and a mellifluous baritone voice, rather like Neil Hannon crossed with Scott Walker, or something…
The instrumentation is complex, jittery and at times electronic – and the lyrics are bizarre but affecting, maybe some shades of Brel in its existential angst and jarring words.
The instrumental coda at the end has some ridiculous brass squelching, quite OTT really, and overall this is a very impressive release – and why Tiree? BM wants to know more!
