Leeds is surely the home of the most and inventive music in the country right now and there are plenty of labels spending their money to show how great it is purely for the love of it. Gizeh Records are one such label that truly captures the DIY spirit of Leeds in which bands support each other and these two releases from Gizeh Records are proof of this.
Glissando embrace the modern minimalist classical style adding in other influences such as Sigur Ros and Low. It’s both beautiful and frightening, although at times it can be self-indulgent and even boring.
You can hear Low in Her Name Is Calla too, especially the quieter moments, but the guitar based four piece are a more powerful and epic force. None more so than on the 9 minute New England, a rare beast that truly puts the core into slowcore aided by a string section that reinforces the heaviness of the band.
Wren is a quieter affair with gorgeous interwining guitars that prepare you for the builder that is Motherfucker! It’s Alive And It’s Bleeding that leaves you breathless before Rebirth leaves us with a final requiem to reflect upon what we have just heard (unless you skip forward to the excellent hidden track; the acoustic Long Distance Runner). And this is just the mini-album, a taster of what is to come.
