This latest Girobabies release looks as if (if the threats are correct) it may be the lead track on their final album, due out next year – and outwith a more hyped -up live setting it’s not exactly an easy listen.
Among all the DIY enthusiasm and wit that Girobabies have provided us with over the years it is worth remembering just how mordantly dark some of the musical and lyrical content has been, and this is certainly no exception. Over a low-key, down-tempo backing track (starting with Jo’s bassline, then drums and meandering guitar) frontman Mark narrates a series of events and situations which sounds like a long and paranoid come-down, from substances and from life – a “lonely shuffle, without shuffle…” with paranoia and guilt not far away…
The chorus of “It’s been a long summer” is both resigned and threatening, with some real atmospheric production which could come from a horror film summer. The final run-through sounds almost funereal, a requiem for the good times…
Arguably the best thing Girobabies have done…they’re not messing!
