This was a great night – 300 or so teenage girls in competing outfits but no bitchiness (overheard: “really like your belt…” “oh I know from Insta…” etc). There were also some grimacing parents at this over-14s gig and a few male companions/boyfriends looking sheepish, but actually what was not to like.
Support act Ashnikko bounced on with her DJ “guy in the back” and gave us some good raps, a Post Malone cover and some pretty good advice about not being pestered by shitty guys – her delivery was great, the tracks great and really set up this gig, as a decent support hopefully usually does…
After a brief break the next hour and a bit was completely full-on. BM had heard that Girli was good live but this was a revelation. Bursting onstage in a leopard skin two piece (with modesty-covering minishorts, love your style girl!).
Milly (for that is her real name) pranced around with her backing singer/foil DG GG (Gigi?, still have not tracked her down online…) to a good selection of tracks from her debut album ‘Odd One Out’ and boy was it good! There were shades of Girls Aloud, MIA and some of the best processed pop music of the last decade but this combo made it their own… Highlights were ‘Neck Contour’ and ‘Fuck Off Back to LA’… and support act Ashnikko reappeared to take the verses on one track.
BM was hoping for older song ‘Girl from the Internet’ and Milly did not disappoint, to a jumping audience, an orgasmic musical experience… thanks so much.
Encore included the completely OTT ‘Hot Mess’ – they really went for this one!
This was a bravura performance, timing perfect, and a total justification of the Girli is the total fucking thing – she is doing on her own terms though, and BM gives total respect to Milly and GG tonight – they ruled Glasgow… and hope to see them soon, on festival bills maybe this summer?
