With my love of indie rock, this energy-filled anthem from Yorkshire based 4 piece Girl Afraid caught my ear immediately.
‘Dutch Courage’ nothing short of an indie gem. Its high octane, catchy delivery grabs you quicker than a taxi in Singapore while the chorus is delivered fast and it’s surprising that the lead vocalist manages to get all his vocals within the chorus section (there are a lot of words). But, it’s meant to be that. It’s telling a story of having self-assurance even if it is over-exaggerated from being intoxicated.
‘Dutch Courage’ is a relatable to many for the most part and it reminds me of my youth having grown up listening to the likes of Queens Of The Stone Age and Arctic Monkeys. For me, anything which reminds me of my early days is always going to be a winner. On the flip side, I would have liked to see the band maybe delve into a more unique space having heard influences from a variety of different places.
Nevertheless it works and is a delightful indie peach.
