This gig was the launch night for Bizerk’s new album, out now, collecting mainly a series of EPs into something a bit more coherent. The album is now available in all good record shops and BM would say just buy it.
First on was Babe, odd name but they were a revelation.
The singer projected Liam Gallagher but sounded like Anthony (of the Johnsons, he calls himself something else now…) or even Liz Fraser. The D&B section (cannae spell rthymn, no rythmn maybe) had a combined age of maybe 30 but were going at it like Talking Heads’ Weymouth and Frantz. They fairly wowed the audience with some melodic, well thought out and damn funky music – BM’s tip for the top, an unexpected bonus, really original sound…
The headliners completely smashed this gig. The sound system and stage were great, sound excellent and from the start, to reuse an overused cliche, Bizerk were on fire. They have honed the sound and delivery from BM’s last experience of them at Tenement Trail and ripped through a well-established set.
Frontman and chief instigator Louie was on form, a stage-diving attempt after about three songs, and a full band (able drums, bass, guitar, and looked like Audrey was bossing it from the back with the samples, keyboard etc, shame that she didn’t sing more harmonies).
And the songs -‘We made a porno…’ still very uncomfortable, especially to anyone with a daughter, but proves its point and trade the correct blows, 2016 awareness alert. The rest of the ‘EPs’ stuff is just amazing, all spat raps, funky and crashing backbeats, who ever said that Scotland would never produce a good rap act. Since Sugar Bullet (ask your Gran, or her drugdealer) in the 90s, several have tried but we appear to be entering into a golden era.
A cover of ‘Song 2’ almost took the roof off the place (would be unfortunate given main Tackintosh post fire erection does not really have a roof at the moment so that would make the Art School two roofs short of an Art School) and the encore goaded a, by now, foaming crowd (and at a number of orifices, BM can attest) – we just could not get enough of this stuff.
So good luck HBiZ with the other dates and the festivals, you are gonnae slay em. An epic evening, and over by 10.30 and home before the City Centre/taxi madness…
