So what on earth is this?
James Graham from The Twilight Sad takes the lead vocals here with a “mystery” collaborator – could it be Aidan Moffat? Mibbees aye, mibbees naw…
Anyway it is a great track, the sparser instrumentation (no guitars apart from bass) letting James loose on something like a torch song, which The Twilight Sad have shown signs of over the years, but this is a different setting…
The music veers between electronica and acoustic tropes, and there are some excellent manipulations of the vocals, maybe the first time James’ voice has had this done to it.
There are also strings.. WTF?
The lyrics have similar themes to The Sad – digging up the past, the singer and other people’s faults, a plea for forgiveness, most of that is there… “You Don’t Even Know Who You’re Killing This Time”… “I was friends with leeches and snakes…”
It’s actually quite a banger – and the bpm and driving electronic soundmix could see this at the local indie disco, if such things still exist…
There’s also an a cappella breakdown towards the end – before we get back into heavy dance vibes… it is infectious and odd – totally excellent and please can we have an official charidee sweepstake on who the mystery collaborator actually is…
