Gagarin, according to his press release, makes ‘atmospheric and moody electronic inspired by landscape’. If that’s true, then the landscapes he surround himself with must be very cold, hard places. This is as icy and aloof and album as these ears has heard in a long time. There is much to admire in the sounds here, but very little to actually like – a bit like a painting in which you can appreciate the technique but which has very little emotion to actually engage you. The closest contemporary sound would be Four Tet. Unlike Four Tet, however, Gagarin lacks that crucial element of warmth which would keep people returning to his work. He’s got the tools. Now what he needs is the passion to use them.
