Scotland has an undeniably rich musical heritage and arguably they don’t come any finer than Selkirk’s own, Frightened Rabbit. The band certainly ended 2010 on a high note after performing two sell out shows at Glasgow’s legendary Barrowland venue; something singer, Scott Hutchison, admits he never thought he would accomplish.
“I didn’t even necessarily expect to play the Barras, maybe supporting someone; but never as the headliner – and certainly not to sell it out once – and definitely not twice. I would say that once this is done, I would quite happily quit,”
“There’s nothing left to do,” he adds jokingly.
This year the band look set to take on even bigger stages after a successful run of festivals in 2010.
“T in the Park was been one of the best things we did last year but this is something, that when you’re a band in Scotland you work towards, constantly. I remember looking out and seeing the tent half full and then by the time we got on stage the tent was bursting. It was just amazing.”
“I think that was a big reason the two Barrowland shows did so well – because of T in the Park. We got a lot of new fans through playing there this year.”
Reminiscing to when Frightened Rabbit’s frontman, Hutchison, operated as a solo artist (still under the name Frightened Rabbit), it is unbelievable to think that this broody, yet frantically energetic frontman was so innately shy that he could barely face his adorning audience whilst playing.
“I faced the side certainly, and did engage in much crowd interaction. Maybe it was a bit of a confidence thing – I wasn’t sure how to approach it. Even as far as up until the summer there we hadn’t done a big run of festivals. When you do something like that you gain a little bit more confidence with each show you play.”
2011 certainly looks to be an exciting year for the band, especially since the band recently signed to Atlantic Records. And it seems Hutchison and co. couldn’t believe their luck.
“Atlantic Records came out the blue. I really wasn’t expecting to hear from them, but they approached us with a lot of enthusiasm and they took a lot of time to show us what they do and who works there,”
“It comes down to the people you like as well because we’ve operated for a while now without masses of cash. Basically Atlantic offered us more of a commitment than any other label, so it became a really easy decision to make.”
However, Hutchison shows he is not naive about changes that will inevitably take place when signing to a branch of a major record label.
“Who knows, we might get a bigger tour van,”
“Things will definitely change. On an independent label you may be get a little bit more freedom at times, so I’m am expecting for changes like that to happen, but as yet, we’ve not been on it for long, so nothing really has changed just now.”
