This simply gorgeous but melancholy track is one of the first to be previewed from London band Firestations new album ‘Thick Terrain’.
The band comprise Mike Cranny, Laura Copsey, Martin Thompson, Tom Hargreaves and Neil Walsh – they have had a relationship with the peerless Lost Map label for several years now and this track shows their growth and development.
Starting with a twinkle of keys and a couple of acoustic strums, it blossoms into a mid-paced, wistful concoction with a slight Americana tinge, mixed with bucolic English folk vibes. The half-spoken verse refers to being “100 seconds to midnight” before the chorus asks “Where is the joy – is it over?”
Things get worse in the second verse with reference to a “creeping dread – that keeps you in your bed” – sounds banal but these words mean so much to many people who struggle with mental health issues, anxiety and the rest – now we can sing about it!
A great shoe-gazey guitar solo rattles into action later with more runs through the chorus as the whole thing grinds to a halt, not overstaying its welcome.
Highly recommended.
