Glasgow-based Fiction Faction strike a solid impression with, ‘Apparitions’, their debut single. Displaying traditional song writing and some more contemporary noise making, the band creates a sense of originality with this the most recent release from Edinburgh’s 17 Seconds Records. The guitars enchant the listener throughout, making musical slurry of hypnotic tones and driving jagged rhythms. The vocals are left relatively bare in terms of production, raw and clenching upon the rest of the ambience. The marriage of words and music seems to be on the money too, it’s meant to be spooky and that is indeed what both convey.
To pigeonhole this song or indeed Fiction Faction is tricky as the single reverts in its B-Side to a more nineties style of electronic music. The remix of ‘A Fair Escape’ provided by Glasgow’s Nevada Base is decent and fulfilling for that of its genre. All in all, the single leaves you wanting more, in a good way. The band appears to have various other modes within their material which can be heard on their social networking sites. I look forward to hearing more of these in 2011.
