Building classy grooves and funky bass lines around lung busting sax solos and masterful guitar work, Glasgow funk aficionados Federation of the Disco Pimp present a modern take on an almost forgotten genre with an impressive collection of outstanding instrumentals.
Jazzy opener ‘Gimme Some Light’ certainly sees FOTDP give an acknowledging wink of the eye to fellow Scots, the Average White Band. However, intent on establishing their own identity, upbeat number ‘Bruce Lee’ quickly becomes consumed by an enjoyable, disco driven haze of funkiness whilst ‘Robot Rock’, mellow and psychedelic in its approach, features an incredibly infectious sax riff throughout.
Elsewhere the Glasgow seven-piece throw in a note perfect version of the surprisingly much covered yet awkwardly complex, ‘Pinball Number Count’ which some may recall from children’s TV show, Sesame Street. And accentuating the bands chemistry onstage is a bonus live track which resourcefully merges two classics into one – Quincy Jones’ ‘Money Runner’ and Herbie Hancock’s ‘Hang Up Your Hang Ups’.
Stand-out track ‘Above the Law’ smolders gracefully with sporadic bursts of rippling piano strokes before gradually arriving at an outlandish and intensely rocky middle section.Federation of the Disco Pimp embrace the expansive realms of Soul, Funk and Jazz and in turn create a meticulous maze of musical variation which ultimately makes them difficult to ignore.
