Almost local band Polly were first on for the night and the name might have given away the hint of Nirvana in their grungy pop.
Having a decent start they eventually got sidetracked by various technical issues and I think the band would themselves say they have had much better nights.
Big Cheese were up next making a pattern of band names shared with Nirvana songs. This was the 5 piece hardcore punk band’s first tour but I don’t think anyone would have guessed. Lead vocalist Tom Hardwick owned the stage in a fast paced set that featured plenty of metal riffs. I had not heard much about Big Cheese before seeing them tonight but I am certain they will be heading up rosters in no time.
Fucked Up have been going for more than 20 years but any concern of them aging tamely were thoroughly squashed as Damian managed to knock a monitor into the crowd within seconds of arriving on stage. Maegan Brooks from Big Cheese joined them to play a double shift on guitar as they made their way through a relatively recent set with some explosive energy.
The famously rowdy Glasgow crowd were surprisingly quiet compared to the energy levels of the performance and for some bands this could have been dampened the mood however the experienced Canadians handle it like professionals breaking up their stage antics with breaks in which they gave charming anecdotes about becoming parents. They shared a genuine enthusiasm that you can tell is being brought to every show they do.
